Matthew Schum is from a working-class background in Minneapolis, where he began nonprofit
arts work as a researcher in 1999 at Artspace Projects. Time in museums includes MoMA, the
Walker, and the Vancouver Art Gallery as an international student at SFU and an editor at the
student-run newspaper. He was later an editor at Zing Magazine in SoHo and Flash Art in Milan
and has edited various artist books and catalogs. Schum wrote his PhD in art history at UCSD
on curating and 21st-century viewership. Writing on art has appeared in Aperture, Artforum,
Flash Art, Mousse, Witte de With Review and X-TRA and he has lectured at Otis, NYU, CSUB,
and CSULB. Schum has led numerous exhibitions for nonprofits and galleries with commissions
for LAXART, as co-curator of Desert X 2019, and curator of programs at Los Angels Nomadic
Division.
