Cassils

CASSILS is a visual artist working in live performance, film, sound, sculpture and photography. Cassils has
achieved international recognition for a rigorous engagement with the body as a form of social sculpture.
Drawing on conceptualism, feminism, body art, gay male aesthetics; Cassils forges a series of powerfully
trained bodies for different performative purposes. It is with sweat, blood, and sinew that Cassils
constructs a visual critique around ideologies and histories.

La Arena (Spanish for sand), is a space where we will workshop In Plain Sight - a collaboration of eighty artists creating an artwork to abolish for profit immigrant detention. La Arena is ten cubic yards of sand, symbolic of land which collects the marks of our bodies as we move both conceptually and physically through the curriculum of the IPS workshop. Land connotes migration, territory, borders, and the strata of unmarked histories. A quote from Theodore Roosevelt from Citizenship in a Republic, in 1910 summarizes the ethos of artistic spirit we are summoning when approaching this work- “It is not the critic who counts; nor the person who points out how the strong person stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the person who is actually in the arena, “[...]who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again; who spend themselves in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if they fail, at least fails while daring greatly[...]”.
