Blessing of the Boats, 2019

6 x 24 x 12 ft

Interactive installation

Warehouse, Geffen Contemporary at MOCA

Muna Malik’s Blessing of the Boats asks viewers to confront the rise in anti-immigrant rhetoric and policies and enter into a conversation around the past, present, and future of immigration in the United States. The installation features a boat constructed out of canvas, wood, and light that serves as a symbol for the thousands of refugees fleeing war, persecution, and poverty around the world. The piece expands and evolves as viewers start to interact with it, making origami boats with heartfelt messages for people who are on this journey that they may never meet. Each boat will hold an individual reflection; together they’ll find connection where there is too often a divide.
