Sonja Thomsen

School of the Art Institute of Chicago
artist / mother / professor / organizer
Milwaukee WI / Chicago IL
Sonja Thomsen’s multifaceted practice choreographs light in space, photograph and sculpture. Working in abstraction while pointedly engaged with questions of equity, Sonja Thomsen’s installation practice immerses the public in wonder as a radical way to imagine a post-patriarchal future. Her current project ‘penumbral iterations’ is engrossed with the duality of the term penumbra, the almost-shadow created by eclipsing bodies and the emanation of implied rights to privacy from our Bill of Rights. This summer Poor Farm Press will release her new artist book ‘You Will Find It Where It Is: A Reader,’ where Thomsen claims the peripheral as the locus of attention. Thomsen has exhibited extensively nationally and internationally. Thomsen received a BA from Kenyon College and MFA from San Francisco Art Institute. She is a mother of two and Assistant Professor, Adj. in the Photography Department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
