Critical Resistance/See Black Women
Building Project Manager/Founder
Oakland
My name is T and I joined Critical Resistance as the Building Project manager for their new national offices and community space. I believe serving locally builds and strengthens the community, and stronger communities ignite collaborative efforts that build resources. The building is important to me because it will reflect and serve the communities of color being displaced in Oakland due to the rapid gentrification currently taking place. I look forward to the collaborative efforts with Critical Resistance and community members in order to create a new home for our struggle to bring about real change towards abolishing the prison industrial complex. Ultimately, the new building will be a stepping stone in our effort to create a stronger community through the resources and educational opportunities provided by Critical Resistance. We are having an art auction in the Fall of 2020 to raise money towards our efforts to abolish the P.I.C. Additionally, I am the Co- Founder of "See Black Women." See Black Women was initiated as a collaborative response to the Visual Arts Commission’s mismanagement of the Maya Angelou monument for the San Francisco Public Library in 2019. Our intention is to highlight the way in which Lava Thomas' sculpture was rejected on the basis that it was not consistent with the majority of monuments in America. More specifically, monuments of white men who have performed egregious acts against Black Women. The concern we are putting forward is the repeated pattern and paradigm of systemic institutionalized racism (written into law by Stefani) that has stripped Black Women of having agency over their work and the representation of their bodies. People should talk to me about these projects and how to get involved.
